Kirkcudbright

Kirkcudbright

Kirkcudbright, Scotland/UK Kilcudbrit, Kircuthbright ‘Church of (St) Cuthbert’ from the Gaelic Cil Cudbert. The present kirk‐ derives from kirkja but the word order is Celtic. St Cuthbert (c.634–87) became a monk in Scotland and Bishop of Lindisfarne (685–7) and subsequently the most popular saint in northern England. He was buried originally in Lindisfarne, but his bones were removed so as not to fall into the hands of the Danes, being taken round south‐west Scotland and northern England. It is said that they lay here while on their way to Durham for final burial in 999.
