King Mark

Mark, King

Mark, King. Cuckold king of Cornwall in international Arthurian legends, an uncle of Tristan and the betrothed of Iseult. A cowardly, easily deceived, yet jealous ruler, there is little of the kingly about him. Usually sited at Tintagel, Cornwall, Mark is also linked to numerous other places, including Lantyan near Fowey, Cornwall, and Lancien, Brittany. His abundant antecedents from the Celtic world include the Welsh March ap Meirchion, the Irish Marcán, and the Breton Konomor (Marcus Conomorus); in Breton Arthuriana he is called Guivarc'h. In two Irish stories of love triangles he plays the same role as rulers greater than he: Conchobar mac Nessa between Deirdre and Noíse and Fionn mac Cumhaill between Diarmait and Gráinne.
