Kettering, UK, USA 1. UK (England): formerly Cytringan and Cateringe ‘(Settlement of) the Followers of Cytra’ from a supposed Old English personal name and ‐ingas.2. USA (Ohio): settled in 1841 as Van Buren Township after Martin Van Buren (1782–1862), President of the USA (1837–41). It was renamed in 1952 after Charles F. Kettering (1876–1958), an inventive engineer.

Kettering

Kettering city (1990 pop. 60,569), Montgomery co., SW Ohio, a suburb of Dayton; settled c.1812, inc. 1952. Electric motors, transportation equipment, and machinery are manufactured, and there are numerous testing laboratories for auto and electrical products. The city is the seat of Kettering College of Medical Arts and two major hospitals and research centers.
