Kendal
Kendal, Canada, UK UK (England): formerly Cherchebi, Kircabikendala, and Kendale ‘(Village with a Church in the) Valley of the (River) Kent’. The original name was Kirkby, meaning ‘Village with a Church’ from the Old Scandinavian kirkju ‘church’ and bý ‘village’. Kendal from the Kent River and dal ‘valley’ was added to distinguish it from other towns called Kirkby. This part of the name was later dropped to leave just Kendal.
