Kelly ♀, ♂ Originally an Anglicized form of the ancient Irish male name Ceallach. It is now very widely used in the English-speaking world, mainly as a girl's name. This is a transferred use of the surname Ó Ceallaigh ‘descendant of Ceallach’.
