Kāśi

Kāśi. One of the seven sacred cities of India, an earlier name for Vārānasī (Benares). A centre of pilgrimage with many temples, it is especially important for devotion to Śiva, who is worshipped (in a temple of this name) as Viśvanātha, Lord of the universe.

Kāsī

Kāsī. A kingdom of ancient India, bordering the River Ganges to the north and centred on its capital Vārāṇasī. During the lifetime of the Buddha, its independence was extinguished when it was incorporated into the Magadhan empire (see Magadha).
