Karl von Piloty

Karl von Piloty , 1826–86, German historical painter; son of Ferdinand Piloty (1786–1844), a noted German lithographer. Karl first won recognition for his genre paintings, such as The Nurse (1853). He soon specialized in historical paintings, which were famous in his day for realism and emphasis on color. As a popular professor at the Munich Academy, he exercised a great influence on many German painters. Among his well-known works are The Death of Caesar and Galileo in Prison.

Piloty, Karl von

Piloty, Karl von (b Munich, 1 Oct. 1826; d Ambach, nr. Munich, 21 July 1886). German painter, active in Munich, where in 1856 he became a professor at the Academy and in 1874 its director. He was highly successful with large, opulent history paintings in which the settings, furnishings, and costumes were reconstructed with great accuracy. They gave the public the same kind of feast for the eye as Hollywood epics and now have a distinctly hollow ring. His pupils included Makart.

Piloty, Karl von
