Goldmark, Károly (b Keszthély, Hung., 1830; d Vienna, 1915). Hung. composer and violinist, son of a cantor. After playing in th. orchs., settled in Vienna 1850 as composer, teacher, and critic. His tuneful, colourful mus. is remembered today chiefly through his sym.-poem Rustic Wedding (1875). Comp. 6 operas incl. Die Königin von Saba (The Queen of Sheba) (1875) and Ein Wintermärchen (A Winter's Tale, after Shakespeare) (1908); sym. in C minor; sym. in E♭; ov. Sakuntala; 2 vn. concs.; str. qt.; vc. sonata; etc.

Karl Goldmark

Karl Goldmark 1830-1915, Hungarian composer. His concert overture Sakuntala (1865), his symphony A Rustic Wedding (1870), and an opera, The Queen of Sheba (1875), were very popular. His nephew, Rubin Goldmark, 1872-1936, a pupil of Dvořák in New York, was a composer and educator. From 1924 to 1936 he was chairman of the composition department at the Juilliard School of Music. His works include A Negro Rhapsody (1923).
