It produces cotton and silk textiles, machinery, fine porcelain and lacquer ware, rolling stock, and iron. The city, built on the site of the old village of Yamazaki, was the seat of the Maeda clan (16th-19th cent.) and gradually became an industrial center. Kenrokuen Park (rebuilt 17th cent.), with its splendid landscape gardens and a famous No theatre and school, is in Kanazawa.
