Markandaya, Kamala
Markandaya, Kamala (1923– ), British novelist, born and educated in India. Nectar in a Sieve (1954) established her as the first notable woman novelist from the Indian subcontinent. The impact of new economic and political ideas on traditional Indian society is Markandaya's main theme in A Silence of Desire (1960), Possession (1963), A Handful of Rice (1966), and The Coffer Dams (1969). Other novels include The Nowhere Man (1972); Two Virgins (1973), which marks a radical change, showing a more experimental style and a more positive view of modernization; The Golden Honeycomb (1977); and Pleasure City (1982).
