Kagera , river, c.250 mi (400 km) long, formed on the Rwanda-Tanzania border, E central Africa, by the confluence of the Nyabarongo and Ruvubu rivers. The Kagera's headwaters, which rise in the highlands of Rwanda and Burundi, are the remotest sources of the Nile. The Kagera flows north and east, forming part of Tanzania's borders with Rwanda and Uganda, before emptying into Lake Victoria. There is a small hydroelectric plant at Kikagati, Uganda.
