Kadoma
Kadoma, Japan, Zimbabwe 1. Japan (Honshū): the former Chinese characters meant ‘Opening Gate’ from kado ‘gate’ and ma ‘opening’ or ‘between’. This was a name for land which was not very fertile and thus landowners did not have to pay taxes on it. The current Chinese characters mean ‘True Gate’ from kado ‘gate’ and ma ‘true’.2. Zimbabwe: founded in 1907 and previously spelt Gatooma, it is named after a nearby hill, which was itself named after a local chief whose name in Ndebele meant ‘(He who) does Not Thunder, or make Noise’. The spelling was changed in 1980 after Zimbabwe achieved independence.
