Kabwe

Kabwe, Zambia Broken Hill An Australian mining engineer, Thomas G. Davey, gave the site its original name from a town in New South Wales, Australia. The town developed around Broken Hill Mine opened in 1902. It was renamed Kabwe ‘Small Stone’ in 1965, a year after Zambian independence, in the Bantu language of the Lala people.

Kabwe

Kabwe , formerly Broken Hill, city (1990 pop. 166,519), central Zambia. During the 20th cent. it was an important lead and zinc mining and smelting center. As a result, the area suffers from significant lead pollution.
