Judas Maccabaeus

Judas Maccabaeus (d. 161 BC), leader of the Jews in the revolt against the Seleucid king of Syria. He won a series of victories in 166–164 and in 163 gained full religious liberty from Antiochus V Eupator (164–2). He successfully negotiated with Rome for help, but before the results of his mission were known he was killed in battle.

Judas Maccabaeus

Judas Maccabaeus (died c.161 BC) Jewish leader. He led a Jewish revolt in Judaea against the Seleucid king Antiochus IV Epiphanes from around 167, and succeeded in recovering Jerusalem, dedicating the Temple anew, and protecting Judaism from Hellenization. He also features in the Apocrypha as the hero of the Maccabees.

Judas Maccabaeus

Judas Maccabaeus (d. c.161 bc), Jewish leader. Leading a Jewish revolt in Judaea against Antiochus IV Epiphanes from around 167, he recovered Jerusalem and dedicated the Temple anew, and protected Judaism from Hellenization. He is the hero of the two books of the Maccabees in the Apocrypha.
