Cueva, Juan de la
Cueva, Juan de la (1543–1610), Spanish dramatist whose most important plays were produced in Seville between 1578 and 1581. Writing in the period when classical influence was still paramount, Cueva owes much to Seneca, but he was also the first writer of plays based on Spanish history. His dramas on Bernardo el Carpio and King Sancho and his tragedy Los siete infantes de Lara (The Seven Princes of Lara) paved the way for the great dramas of Lope de Vega and his contemporaries. Cueva was also an innovator in the Spanish comedy of manners with his Comedia del viejo enamorado (Comedy of the Infatuated Old Man) and El infamador (The Backbiter).
