Juan de Juni

Juan de Juni

Juan de Juni (b ?Joigny, c.1507; d Valladolid, Apr. 1577). French sculptor, active in Spain from c.1533. He worked in León and Salamanca before settling in Valladolid in 1540. A prolific sculptor of religious subjects, he excelled in the dramatic expression of emotion, and is generally ranked next to Alonso Berruguete as the outstanding Spanish sculptor of his period. Berruguete himself called him ‘the best foreign carver in Castile’. Juni's most famous works are probably the Entombment groups in Valladolid Museum (1545) and Segovia Cathedral (1571). On stylistic grounds he is believed to have visited Italy early in his career and he has been proposed as the author of the famous St Roch (SS. Annunziata, Florence), usually attributed to Stoss.
