Pantoja de la Cruz, Juan
Pantoja de la Cruz, Juan (b Valladolid, c.1553; d Madrid, Oct./Nov. 1608). Spanish painter. He was a pupil of Sánchez Coello and succeeded him as the leading portraitist at the court of Philip II (see Habsburg) and later Philip III. His style was stiff and stately, well expressing the formality of court life. He also painted religious pictures and still-lifes, although none of the still-lifes are known to survive. His work is well represented in the Prado, Madrid.
