Batlle Planas, Juan

Batlle Planas, Juan (b Torroella de Montgri, nr. Girona, 3 Mar. 1911; d Buenos Aires, 8 Oct. 1966). Argentine painter, printmaker, designer, and writer, considered the father of Surrealist art in his country. He was born in Spain and moved to Buenos Aires with his family in 1913. Although he had lessons from his painter uncle José Planas-Casas (1900–60), he was essentially self-taught. He was an energetic publicist for modern art and trained and influenced numerous Argentinian artists. His work included murals in public and private buildings, stage designs, and book illustrations, and he also wrote poetry and numerous articles about the psychological response to colour and form.
