Kosuth, Joseph
Kosuth, Joseph (1945– ). One of the leading American exponents of Conceptual art. He was born in Toledo, Ohio, and studied at the Toledo Museum School of Design, 1955–62, and the Cleveland Art Institute, 1963–4, before settling in New York, where he studied at the School of Visual Arts, 1965–7, and at the New School for Social Research (his subjects were anthropology and philosophy), 1971–2. In 1969 he became American editor of the journal Art-Language (see ART & LANGUAGE). Kosuth has been much concerned with linguistic analysis of concepts of art, his best-known work being One and Three Chairs (MOMA, New York, 1965), which consists of an actual chair alongside a full-scale photograph of a chair and an enlarged photograph of a dictionary definition of a chair. ‘Actual works of art', he says, ‘are little more than historical curiosities.’
