Hellmesberger, Joseph (b Vienna, 1828; d Vienna, 1893). Austrian violinist, conductor, and teacher. Father and brother were also violinists. Pupil of father. Cond., Vienna Gesellschaft concerts 1851–9, prof. of vn., Vienna Cons. 1851–77, dir. 1851–93. Leader, Vienna PO 1855–77 and of opera orch. 1860–77. Founder and leader, Hellmesberger Qt., 1849–91.
