Myslbek, Josef Václav

Myslbek, Josef Václav (b Prague, 20 June 1848; d Prague, 2 June 1922). The leading Czech sculptor of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He created numerous statues of national heroes in Prague, most notably the famous St Wenceslas Monument in Wenceslas Square, which was conceived in 1887 but not completed until 1923, the year after Myslbek's death. His work is in the Renaissance tradition but has a suitably Romantic Slavonic ardour. He had an international reputation, winning awards in Chicago, Paris, and elsewhere.

Myslbek, Josef Václav (1848–1922). The leading Czech sculptor of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He created numerous statues of national heroes in Prague, most notably the famous St Wenceslas Monument in Wenceslas Square, which was begun in 1900, and unveiled in 1913 but not completed until 1923, the year after Myslbek's death. His work is in the Renaissance tradition but has a suitably Romantic Slavonic ardour. In addition to statues he made many portraits.

Myslbek, Josef Václav (1848–1922). The leading Czech sculptor of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He created numerous statues of national heroes in Prague, most notably the famous St Wenceslas Monument in Wenceslas Square, which was conceived in 1887 but not completed until 1923, the year after Myslbek's death. His work is in the Renaissance tradition but has a suitably Romantic Slavonic ardour; Rodin admired his richly worked bronze surfaces.
