Svoboda, Josef

Svoboda, Josef (b Časlav, 1920; d Prague, 2002). Cz. stage designer. Chief designer and tech. dir., Prague Nat. Th. 1951–6. Influenced by Appia and Craig, developed concept of ‘psychoplastic stage’, concentrating on ‘inner meaning’ of work. Has made inspired use of modern lighting techniques, incl. laser beams in his 1970 Die Zauberflöte in Munich. Other celebrated opera designs were seen at Venice 1961 (Intolleranza); La Scala 1971 (Wozzeck); CG 1966 (Die Frau ohne Schatten) and The Ring (1974–6); NY Met 1972 (Carmen); at Deutsche Oper, Berlin, 1991 (Salome).
