Mánes, Josef
Mánes, Josef (b Prague, 12 Apr. 1820; d Prague, 9 Dec. 1871). Czech painter, illustrator, and designer, the most illustrious member of a family of artists. An ardent patriot at a time when his country, part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was struggling for autonomy, he is regarded as the founder of Czech national painting. Much of his work reflects his study of his country's landscape, costumes, and peasant life, notably his series of twelve paintings of the Months (1865–6) for the clock of Prague's Old Town Hall (replaced by copies; the originals are now in the City Museum). He was also a prolific portraitist. His work was an inspiration to many of his countrymen, notably Mikuláš Aleš (1852–1913), the most prolific Czech decorative painter of his time, and his name was honoured in the Mánes Union of Artists, founded in Prague in 1887. An association somewhat analogous to the Salon d'Automne in Paris, it was largely responsible for introducing progressive trends to Czech art in the early years of the 20th century.
