Antolínez, José

Antolínez, José (bapt. Madrid, 7 Nov. 1635; d Madrid, 30 May 1675). Spanish painter, active in Madrid. Like Murillo in Seville, he had a penchant for paintings of the Immaculate Conception (an example, c.1670, is in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford), and his colourful, sweet style has much in common with Murillo's. His temperament was anything but sweet, however, for he was renowned for his arrogance and vanity; according to Palomino, he died of a fever after overexerting himself and suffering wounds in a fencing bout. Apart from religious works, his output included a few portraits and genre scenes, notably the Picture Dealer (c.1670, Alte Pin., Munich), an intriguing glimpse into the studio of a poor artist.
