Webb, John
Webb, John (1611–72), English artist and scenic designer, a pupil of Inigo Jones. He was employed by Davenant to design and paint scenery for his productions, beginning with The Siege of Rhodes (1656), for which Webb prepared landscapes showing the general layout of the town and harbour, based probably on actual engravings of the time. In the epilogue to The World in the Moon (1697), the author, Elkanah Settle, emphasizes the local origin of Webb's elaborate scenery, in marked contrast to the French fashion of the moment, with a play on the scene-painter's name: ‘Tis home-spun Cloth; All from an English Web.’
