John Warburton

Warburton, John

Warburton, John (1682–1759), English antiquarian and book collector, who had at one time in his possession some 60 Elizabethan and Jacobean plays in manuscript, many of them unique copies of works which had never been printed. Unfortunately, through his own carelessness and the ignorance of his servant Betsy Baker, who somehow got possession of them, all but three were, as Warburton himself says, ‘unluckely burnd or put under Pye Bottoms’. He left a list of the titles of these lost plays, from which it appears that the chief sufferers from Betsy's depredations were Thomas Dekker, John Ford, and Philip Massinger.

Warburton, John

Warburton, John (1682–1759), herald and antiquary, an indefatigable collector of rare manuscripts. Most of the rare Elizabethan and Jacobean plays in his possession were through his own ‘carelessness and the ignorance’ of Betsy Baker, his servant, ‘unluckily burned or put under pye bottoms’.
