John Stanley

Stanley, John

Stanley, John (d. 1414), lieutenant to Robert de Vere, marquis of Dublin and duke of Ireland, 1386–7. As justiciar (1389–92) Stanley faced allegations of official misconduct in 1391. An investigation was ordered, with particular reference to the revenues of the lordship, the strength of his retinue, and his actions concerning the ransoming of Niall O'Neill. He was in Ireland during Richard II's first expedition, and served as Henry IV's lieutenant in the lordship 1399–1401. His final appointment in 1413 as lieutenant was cut short by his death in 1414. His pay was often in arrears, which may help to explain the reputation he left in Ireland for oppressive extortions.
