Smith, John Raphael
Smith, John Raphael (b Derby, 1752; d Doncaster, 2 Mar. 1812). English printmaker, publisher, painter, and draughtsman, son of a landscape painter, Thomas Smith of Derby (d 1767). He was one of the leading printmakers of the day, producing (most notably) numerous plates after portraits by Gainsborough, Reynolds, and Romney, and also some after his own designs. Usually he worked in mezzotint, but also in aquatint and stipple. In addition to his work as an artist, he was a highly successful publisher and seller of prints, exporting large numbers to France (a bon viveur, he took part of his payment in champagne and claret). The Napoleonic Wars ruined this market, however, and in the last decade of his life Smith worked as a pastel portraitist.
