John Heminge

Heminge, John

Heminge, John [ John Heminges, John Hemmings] (1556–1630), English actor, a member of the Chamberlain's Men and probably the first to play Falstaff. When the company was reorganized in 1603 as the King's Men he appears to have acted as their business manager, and probably for this reason was instrumental with his fellow actor Henry Condell in arranging for the printing of Shakespeare's plays in the one-volume edition—the First Folio, containing 36 plays—published in 1623. He and his joint editor have been criticized on several counts, including their arbitrary division of each play into five acts, on the classic model favoured by Ben Jonson, and other sins of omission and commission which have been at the root of much literary controversy; but without their efforts the plays might well have been lost, as the author himself made no move to preserve them and no manuscript indisputably by Shakespeare has been found.
