John Fletcher Hurst

John Fletcher Hurst 1834-1903, American Methodist bishop and educator, b. Maryland. He was president of Drew Theological Seminary from 1873 until 1880, when he was elected bishop. Bishop Hurst was founder and chancellor (1891-1902) of American Univ., Washington, D.C., although the university did not open until after his death. His numerous writings include A History of the Christian Church (1897-1900).

Fletcher, Giles, the elder

Fletcher, Giles, the elder (1546–1611), was sent as an envoy to Russia in 1588. He published Of the Russe Common Wealth (1591), a pioneering account of Russian government. His Licia, or Poemes of Love (1593) is one of the first sonnet sequences to follow the publication of Astrophel and Stella (1591). He was the uncle of John Fletcher and father of Giles and Phineas Fletcher.
