Drinkwater, John (1882–1937), English poet and dramatist, who was for some years actor and general manager at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, where most of his plays were first produced. The most successful of his early verse plays was the anti-war X = O; A Night of the Trojan War (1917), after which he wrote in prose. His best work was Abraham Lincoln (1919); transferred to London, it ran for over a year and in 1920 was seen in America. Other chronicle plays—Mary Stuart (1922), Oliver Cromwell, and Robert E. Lee (both 1923)—were less successful, and the comedy Bird in Hand (1927; London, 1929) was the most popular of his later plays.
