Frémont, John Charles
Frémont, John Charles (1813–90) US explorer and general. Following his exploration and mapping of the Oregon Trail (1842), Frémont crossed the Sierra Nevada in the winter of 1843–44. A second expedition (1845) led to the Bear Flag Revolt by American settlers, and Frémont became civil governor. He resigned his commission in 1848, and made a fortune in the gold rush. He served briefly (1850–51) as one of California's first two senators and was the first Republican Party presidential candidate losing to James Buchanan. He was removed from office during the Civil War, and became governor of Arizona (1878–83).
