John Alexander Dowie , 1847-1907, founder of the Christian Catholic Church , b. Scotland. He emigrated (1860) to Australia, where he was ordained as a Congregational minister. Dowie's teaching included belief in the healing of disease by prayer, and he founded the International Divine Healing Association. Dowie went to the United States in 1888; he founded his church in Chicago in 1896. In 1901, Dowie established Zion, Ill., which was composed of his followers and governed by special regulations laid down by him.
