Lingelbach, Johannes
Lingelbach, Johannes (bapt. Frankfurt, 10 Oct. 1622; d Amsterdam, ?Nov. 1674). Dutch painter of German birth. He settled in Amsterdam as a child and lived there for the rest of his life apart from a period abroad in his twenties, when he visited France and Italy (he is documented in Rome from 1647 to 1649). Lingelbach painted various types of warmly illuminated Italianate scenes, including views of harbours, and also pictures involving horses (hunting scenes and so on) in the manner of Wouwerman. At the end of his career he produced a few pictures of sea battles, probably inspired by the anniversary of the Battle of Lepanto (1571). In addition he painted the figures in the work of many other artists. He was a fine craftsman and his work was popular with 18th- and 19th-century collectors. There are examples in many major galleries.
