Johannes Froben

Johannes Froben , 1460-1527, German printer. He established himself at Basel and there in 1516 printed the Greek New Testament, edited and translated into Latin by Erasmus. Erasmus edited many publications of Froben, contributing to the fame of Froben's press for printing scholarly texts. Froben also employed the then unknown Hans Holbein as designer.

Froben, Johann (c.1460–1527), printer and scholar. He started a printing press in Basle in 1491, and began publishing on his own in 1512. His press was renowned for the quality of its type and high standards of accuracy. Erasmus moved into his house c.1513 and prepared a series of editions for his press, including the first edition of the Greek NT (1516) and the works of several of the Fathers.
