Johann Gustav Droysen

Johann Gustav Droysen , 1808-84, German historian. A member of the Frankfurt Parliament , he was a leading proponent of German unification under the leadership of his native Prussia. His Geschichte der preussischen Politik [political history of Prussia] (14 vol., 1855-86) poses the goal of German unification as the dominant theme of Prussian history.

Bibliography: See his Outlines of the Principles of History (1858, tr. 1893, repr. 1967).

Keitel, Wilhelm Bodewin Johann Gustav

Keitel, Wilhelm Bodewin Johann Gustav (1882–1946) German field-marshal. As chief-of-staff of the High Command of the German armed forces (1938–45), he handled the armistice negotiations with France in 1940 and ratified the unconditional surrender of Germany in 1945. He was a close adviser of HITLER, and bore some of the responsibility for repressive measures taken by the army in occupied territory. He was hanged after trial at Nuremberg.
