Johann David Wyss
Johann David Wyss , 1743–1818, Swiss author. His Swiss Family Robinson (1813, tr. 1814), an internationally popular classic for children, relates the adventures of a shipwrecked family. It is based on Robinson Crusoe. The book was edited by Wyss's son Johann Rudolf Wyss, 1781–1830, who was professor of philosophy at Bern and author of the Swiss national anthem. |

Michaelis, Johann David
Michaelis, Johann David (1717–91), German Protestant theologian. He is important mainly for his work on Hebrew and Arabic and on the early versions of the Bible. His treatment of the legislation of the Pentateuch as a human achievement had far-reaching influence on the development of German biblical criticism.

Swiss Family Robinson, The
Swiss Family Robinson, The, the romance of a family wrecked on a desert island, written in German by Johann David Wyss (1743–1818), a Swiss pastor. It was published in two parts in Zurich in 1812–13 and the first English translation was a year later.
