Littlewood, Joan
Littlewood, Joan (1914–2002), director of the Theatre Workshop, a company which combined an exuberant musical style with a radical social conscience, and had a strong influence on post-war British theatre. Based at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East, from 1953, the company staged rare English and foreign classics, new works by Delaney and Behan, and popular musicals by Lionel Bart. Littlewood's most celebrated production was Oh, What a Lovely War! (1963), a documentary satire counterpointing the grim statistics of First World War carnage with the affirmative popular songs of the period. Her autobiography, Joan's Book, was published in 1994.
