Joab

Joab

Joab Commander of David's army (2 Sam. 8: 16) and pre-eminent in securing Jerusalem and in campaigns against the Ammonites. His loyalty to David extended to ordering the execution of Absalom, David's son, after Absalom had rebelled against his father, this in spite of David's express instruction that his son's life was to be spared (2 Sam. 18: 5). In the contest for the succession after David's death Joab took the losing side (that of Adonijah) and the successful Solomon had him put to death.

Joab

Joab , in the Bible, son of David's sister Zeruiah and commander of his uncle's armies. A trusted and skillful administrator, he was often vindictive and cruel, as in his killing of Abner, Absalom, and Amasa. David's dying curse on Joab is remarkable. For his support of Adonijah, Solomon had him put to death.
