Jihlava
Jihlava, Czech Republic Iglau Founded in 799 and named after the Jihlava River on which it lies. The name may be derived from the Old Czech igla ‘needle’ (modern Czech jehla) because the river bed was covered with sharp needle‐like stones, or from the German Igel ‘hedgehog’ because these stones resembled the spines of a hedgehog. When silver deposits were found in the nearby hills in the 1240s German miners flooded into the area, settled and gave the city the name Iglau. The Germans were expelled in 1945.
