Jetavana
Jetavana.
1. A park in Śrāvastī in which the lay disciple Anāthapiṇḍika constructed a residence for the Buddha and the monks. It was a favourite place of the Buddha's, and he spent nineteen rain-retreats (vassa) there. 2. Temple complex in Anurādhapura (Sri Lanka) founded by Mahāsena. Originally the Jetavanārāma comprised a vihāra (monastery), a large stūpa, and other buildings. The complex was given to the monks of the Mahāvihāra after a protest against a monk named Tissa who had instigated its building. |

Jetavana
Jetavana (Skt., Jeta or Jetri + vana, ‘wood’). A grove on the outskirts of Śrāvastī, the capital city of Kośala, often frequented by the Buddha. In many of the important dialogues, the Buddha is described as residing in the Jetavana grove.
The Jetavana dāgaba in Śri Lankā, 370 feet in diameter, is the largest dāgaba in existence. A splinter sect of the Theravāda, the Jetavanīyas (formed 4th cent. CE, reabsorbed 12th cent.) take their name from this dāgaba. |
