Juel, Jens
Juel, Jens (b Balslev, Funen [now Fyn], 12 May 1745; d Copenhagen, 27 Dec. 1802). Danish painter. He had a distinguished career both in Denmark and on his wide travels; he studied in Hamburg and between 1772 and 1779 he worked successively in Dresden, Rome, Paris, and Geneva. After settling in Copenhagen he became court painter (1780) and a professor at the Academy (1784), although he had little interest in teaching. Juel painted landscapes, genre scenes, and still-lifes (particularly flowers), but he is most renowned for his sensitive portraits.

Juel, Jens
Juel, Jens (1745–1802). Danish painter. He had a distinguished career both in Denmark and in his travels throughout Europe—he studied in Hamburg and between 1772 and 1779 he worked successively in Dresden, Rome, Paris, and Geneva. After settling in Copenhagen he became court painter (1780) and a professor at the Academy (1784), although he had little interest in teaching.
