Sauvé, Jeanne-Mathilde

Sauvé, Jeanne-Mathilde (née Benoît) (b. 26 Apr. 1922, d. 26 Jan. 1993). Canadian Governor-General 1984–90 Born at Prud'homme (Saskatchewan), she studied at the Universities of Ottawa and Paris and began a career in journalism, becoming a pronounced supporter of women's rights. She entered the House of Commons in 1972, and was the first female cabinet member from Quebec, serving as Minister of Science and Technology, Minister of Environment (1974), and Minister of Communications (1975–9). During Trudeau's last government she was Speaker of the House of Commons, transforming its administrative practices. The first woman to be appointed Governor-General, she was an enthusiastic supporter of national unity.

Jeanne Mathilde Benoit Sauvé , 1922-93, Canadian government official, b. Prud'homme, Saskatchewan. Sauvé, who studied at the universities of Ottawa and Paris, had a distinguished career as a broadcast and print journalist before entering politics. A Liberal, she was elected to Parliament in 1972, thrice reelected, and served as minister of science and technology (1972-74), the environment (1974-75), and communications (1975-79). The first woman speaker of Canada's House of Commons (1980-84), Sauvé was also Canada's first female governor-general (1984-90).
