Perréal, Jean
Perréal, Jean (or Jean de Paris) (b ?c.1450/60; d Paris, 1530). French painter, architect, sculptor, and designer. He was the most renowned French artist of his time, painter to three successive kings ( Charles VIII, Louis XII, and Francis I), but few works survive that can be confidently associated with him. They are mainly manuscript illuminations, but a portrait of Louis XII (c.1514) in the British Royal Collection is attributed to him by some authorities (others consider it a copy). These works show Perréal as a master of scrupulous naturalism, and it has been suggested that he is to be identified with the Master of Moulins. Perréal travelled to Italy several times; on one of these visits he met Leonardo, who mentions him in his notebooks and says he was introduced by him to ‘the manner of dry colouring’—what we now call pastel.
