Mabillon, Jean (1632–1707), Maurist scholar. He entered the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Rémy at Reims in 1653, but in 1664 was sent to Saint-Germain-des-Prés to help edit texts. Probably the most erudite of the Maurists, he produced some 20 folio works, including editions of St Bernard and of various important liturgical documents.

Jean Mabillon

Jean Mabillon , 1623-1707, French scholar, a Benedictine monk. His De re diplomatica (1681; with a supplementary volume, 1704) was the first attempt to develop a critical method of determining the authenticity of documents. Mabillon thus created the science of diplomatics, which made historiography far more scientific. The work remains a classic in its field.
