Bérain, Jean
Bérain, Jean (1637–1711), French theatrical designer, who replaced Vigarani at the Salle des Machines. In 1674 he became designer to the King, and the costumes and decorations which he prepared for Court spectacles greatly influenced all forms of contemporary art. Their most striking characteristic is the complete synthesis of fantasy and contemporary taste. There was no attempt at realism or archaeological reconstruction, and even in costumes for Romans, Turks, or mythological characters, the exotic elements were absorbed into an intensely personal style which left its impress on contemporaries and successors alike.

Berain, Jean
Berain, Jean (bapt. Saint-Mihiel, Lorraine, 4 June 1640; d Paris, 24 Jan. 1711). French designer, decorator, and engraver. He was chief designer at the court of Louis XIV and also worked for the Paris Opéra and various eminent private patrons. His large and highly varied output included designs for stage scenery, furniture, wall decorations, costumes, and festivities. Few of the objects he created survive, but many of his designs were published as engravings; they display a light and whimsical style that heralds the Rococo. His son Jean Berain II (1678–1726) was also a designer.
