Alavoine, Jean-Antoine
Alavoine, Jean-Antoine (1778–1834). French architect. He rebuilt the central spire of Rouen Cathedral after it burned down in 1822, and designed the Colonne de Juillet, Place de la Bastille, Paris, modified and completed by L. -J. Duc. He was a pioneer in the use of cast iron as a building material, as in his restorations of the Cathedrals of Sées (1817–23) and Rouen (from 1823).

Jean Antoine de Baïf , 1532–89, French poet of the Pléiade (see under Pleiad ). He wrote sonnets, didactic and satirical poems, and plays. |
