Jayne Anne Phillips

Phillips, Jayne Anne

Phillips, Jayne Anne (1952–), born in West Virginia, educated at the state university there and later at the University of Iowa, is best known for Black Tickets (1979), short stories about the poor, murderers, people in despair, and people dying of cancer. Her best novel is Machine Dreams (1984), about the collapse of a family, told from each member's point of view. Her novel Shelter (1994) was widely praised, but response to MotherKind (2000) was less enthusiastic. Her other works include the short story collections How Mickey Made It (1981) and Fast Lanes (1987).
