Jayapura
Jayapura or Djajapura , formerly Sukarnapura , town, capital of Papua (Indonesian New Guinea), Indonesia. A regional trade center and seaport, it is on Yos Sudarso Bay (formerly Humboldt Bay; an inlet of the Pacific) near the border with Papua New Guinea. Occupied by the Japanese in World War II, it was liberated by U.S. forces in Apr., 1944, and served as General MacArthur's headquarters. Another former name was Hollandia. |

Jayapura
Jayapura, West Papua/Indonesia Hollandia, Sukarnapura, Kota Baru The capital of West Papua, the name can be taken to mean ‘Victorious Town’ from jaya ‘victorious’, ‘glorious’, or ‘prosperous’ and pur. At one time it was called Sukarnapura ‘Town of Sukarno’, Sukarno (1901–70) being the first President of Indonesia (1945–66).
