genet Cat-like carnivore of the civet family, native to w Europe and s and e Africa. Solitary and nocturnal, genets have slender bodies, short legs, grey to brown spotted fur and banded tails. Length: body – to 58cm (22in), tail – to 53cm (21in); weight: to 2kg (4.4lb). Family Viverridae; genus Genetta.
